Set four centuries ago In China during the Ming dynasty, Colene Schlaepfer’s debut novel follows the moving story of 14-year-old Weilin’s escape from the slave-like conditions of building the Great Wall of China to pursue a better life. The sacrifice of Weilin’s beloved “mama”, who taught him to survive and encouraged him to set off bravely into the wilderness, sustains him as he wanders. The challenges he must overcome mold his character to one of humility, kindness and integrity. This author infuses her narrative with details about the culture, customs and medical practices during the Ming dynasty—an era corresponding to the Pilgrim’s settling of Plymouth in America. Weilin’s story illustrates that though life may be difficult, it also may be well lived.

In Colene Schlaepfer’s book, “A Healer’s Journey”, she takes the readers to 17th century China, during the Ming dynasty. It is a story of a 13 year-old boy who runs away from the Great Wall of China in order to escape his father’s fate—the slave-like conditions for workers building the Wall. His mother prepares him for the challenges and hardships he will encounter ahead as he searches for a better way of living. Even though it is difficult, it is better to leave home than to die on the Wall.
The author’s descriptions of Chinese history, culture and way of life are clear and authentic.
